Erlang VM abort via atom exhaustion
Published Aug 7, 2026 · Updated Aug 7, 2026
Resource exhaustion in Absinthe.Federation before 0.9.3 allows remote attackers to abort the Erlang VM through crafted _entities keys. The _entities resolver passes each freely named key in the open-ended representations argument to convert_key/2, which calls String.to_atom/1 and permanently fills the bounded BEAM atom table. Unauthenticated network access to a federation endpoint is sufficient; exhaustion terminates the node and interrupts service without reading or altering data.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
