Process crash via mismatched lastIndex length validation
Published Jul 30, 2026 · Updated Jul 30, 2026
Out-of-bounds read in node-re2 before 1.25.2 allows attackers to crash a Node.js process via a non-ASCII subject and crafted lastIndex. StrVal validates lastIndex against the subject's UTF-8 byte length, then an unbounded UTF-16 code-unit walk reads beyond the heap buffer. Exploitation requires a global or sticky RE2 and attacker-influenced lastIndex; the primary result is an uncatchable crash, with limited heap disclosure in some cases.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
