Account takeover via retained pre-verification passwords
Published Aug 1, 2026 · Updated Aug 1, 2026
Improper authentication in Better Auth 1.1.3 through 1.6.21 and 1.7.0-beta.0 through 1.7.0-beta.9 allows remote attackers to take over accounts. Magic-link and email-OTP sign-in mark an existing unverified account verified without deleting its planted password or revoking its sessions. The attack requires open email/password registration plus either passwordless plugin and completes after the email owner signs in, leaving persistent read, write, and lockout access.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
