Outbound Basic auth tampering via inherited subfields

Published Aug 1, 2026 · Updated Aug 1, 2026

Prototype-pollution gadgets in Axios 1.15.2 through 1.17.0 allow remote attackers to tamper with outbound Basic authentication headers. Basic auth handling in lib/adapters/http.js and lib/helpers/resolveConfig.js reads missing username and password subfields through the prototype chain, then encodes inherited values into the Authorization header. Exploitation requires a separate prototype-pollution primitive and an own, empty or partial auth object; the result is attacker-chosen credentials or replacement of an existing header.
