Authenticated node crash via unbounded atom creation

Published Sep 25, 2026 · Updated Sep 25, 2026

Affected RabbitMQ Server 4.x releases allow remote authenticated users with the policymaker tag to crash a node via HTTP. The resource_exists/2 and PUT/DELETE handlers pass each untrusted global-parameter name to rabbit_data_coercion:to_atom/1, which invokes binary_to_atom/2 and permanently interns a new atom. Exploitation requires the management plugin, the policymaker tag, and roughly one million requests with unique names; atom-table exhaustion aborts the Erlang VM and interrupts the broker.
