Privilege escalation via DWM use-after-free
Published Aug 11, 2026 · Updated Aug 25, 2026
Use-after-free in Desktop Window Manager in Microsoft Windows 11 and Windows Server 2025 allows local users to gain elevated privileges. Microsoft's public records identify stale memory reuse in DWM but do not disclose the affected code path or the operation that dereferences a freed object. Exploitation requires local code execution with low privileges on an affected build and can lead to full system compromise if the flaw is used to obtain SYSTEM rights.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.

CVSS describes severity. EPSS estimates exploitation probability.
Attacks
What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
Public exploit references
No public exploit references are available in this record.
Labels summarize the accepted research assessment. They do not indicate a test against your environment.
