Arbitrary document read and overwrite via path traversal
Published Jul 23, 2026 · Updated Jul 23, 2026
Path traversal in Office-Word-MCP-Server 1.1.11 and earlier allows remote attackers to read or overwrite host .docx files. The document tools pass absolute paths and ../ sequences to open and save operations because check_file_writeable and ensure_docx_extension enforce no base-directory confinement. Reachability requires control of a filename argument, including through prompt-injected tool use, and access remains limited to .docx files readable or writable by the server process.
