Service interruption via expensive SVG metadata parsing
Published Jul 27, 2026 · Updated Jul 27, 2026
Inefficient image processing in Next.js 15.5.0 through 15.5.20 and 16.0.0 through 16.2.10 allows remote attackers to exhaust CPU. The /_next/image handler's detectContentType function passes an unrecognized remote image buffer to Sharp metadata parsing, allowing a crafted SVG to consume excessive processor time. Exploitation requires a self-hosted deployment using the default image loader with an affected images.remotePatterns entry; Vercel hosting, unoptimized images, and custom loaders are outside scope.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.
- Affected versionversion=>= 15.5.0, < 15.5.21
