System resource exhaustion via leaked cgroup references
Published Jul 19, 2026 · Updated Jul 19, 2026
Resource leakage in affected Linux Kernel branches allows local users to exhaust system resources through the DAMON sysfs interface. The damon_sysfs_memcg_path_to_id() function exits a mem_cgroup_iter() loop without calling mem_cgroup_iter_break(), retaining a cgroup reference. Repeated access by a low-privileged local user can consume the reference-backed resource pool and interrupt system availability.
