CPU exhaustion via nonpositive PKCS#12 iteration counts
Published Oct 2, 2026 · Updated Oct 2, 2026
CPU exhaustion in Bouncy Castle C# .NET before 2.7.0 allows attackers to stall PFX or encrypted-key processing with a nonpositive iteration count. Pkcs12ParametersGenerator repeats hashing until its loop counter equals the supplied count; zero or negative values force roughly 2^32 iterations before integrity or password checks. Exposure requires an application to accept untrusted PFX files or PKCS#8 keys using PKCS#12 encryption; affected worker threads remain busy for minutes without the attacker knowing the password.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
