NTLM authentication material disclosure via advertised bundle URI

Published Aug 21, 2026 · Updated Aug 21, 2026

Information disclosure in Git for Windows before 2.55.0.windows.4 allows remote attackers to receive NTLM authentication material. With transfer.bundleuri=true, bundle-uri.c strips file URI prefixes and opens other non-HTTP(S) advertisements as local paths, so a UNC target initiates outbound SMB. A clone or fetch from a malicious server and the opt-in bundle URI setting are required; the attacker controls the callback host, and the reported consequence is credential exposure.
