Account takeover via plaintext account-action tokens

Published Oct 9, 2026 · Updated Oct 9, 2026

Plaintext token storage in Vikunja before 2.4.0 allows attackers to take over accounts using tokens from an exposed database. In pkg/user/token.go, genToken stores raw password-reset, email-confirmation, and account-deletion tokens in user_tokens, and getToken matches submitted values by plaintext equality. Exploitation requires prior database read access; a pending password-reset token grants takeover of its associated account, including an administrator account, within its 24-hour lifetime.
