Unauthenticated administrator creation via onboarding race
Published Sep 21, 2026 · Updated Sep 21, 2026
Race condition in nginx ignition before 2.41.1 allows remote attackers to create administrator accounts through the onboarding endpoint. The handler checks onboarding state and then saves a full ReadWrite user without a lock, transaction, or unique constraint. An instance must be reachable while onboarding is incomplete; a successful race returns administrator JWTs and permits persistent control of the managed nginx configuration.
