Remote code execution via protocol handler launch
Published Aug 11, 2026 · Updated Aug 25, 2026
Missing authorization in Microsoft Visual Studio Code before 1.132.1 allows remote attackers to execute code via a crafted web page. The hidden web content loader behind the Fetch Web Page tool lets fetched content launch operating-system protocol handlers through window opens or untrusted frame navigation, and extension URL overrides can run before URI trust approval. Exploitation requires user interaction to fetch attacker-controlled content, after which arbitrary code runs with the local user's VS Code privileges.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.

What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
