Mark-of-the-Web bypass via ADS name collision
Published Jun 28, 2026 · Updated Jun 28, 2026
Protection mechanism failure in 7-Zip for Windows through 26.01 allows attackers to bypass Mark-of-the-Web via a crafted RAR5 archive. Its exact-name guard misses a :Zone.Identifier:$DATA stream that NTFS aliases to Zone.Identifier, while ::$DATA aliases the default stream. A user must extract the archive to an NTFS destination with zone propagation, after which archive data can remove SmartScreen warnings and replace visible file content.
