SYSTEM privilege escalation via untrusted executable search path
Published Jun 29, 2026 · Updated Jun 29, 2026
Local privilege escalation in Matrix42 Empirum before 25.5 and 26.x before 26.2 allows local users to execute commands as SYSTEM. PBackupVSS.exe exposes the \.\pipe\PBackupVSS named pipe to all authenticated users, then resolves shadow.exe through an attacker-controlled working directory. A low-privileged account can send crafted IPC messages that make the privileged process launch the planted executable with full SYSTEM authority.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
