Process crash via short encrypted body underflow
Published Jun 25, 2026 · Updated Jun 25, 2026
Out-of-bounds read in Vim before 9.2.0671 allows attackers to crash the editor by inducing a user to open a crafted encrypted file. crypt_get_header_len() validates the file header but not the encrypted body, so crypt_sodium_buffer_decode() subtracts a 24-byte secretstream header from a shorter size_t length and passes the wrapped length to libsodium. Exploitation requires a +sodium build, the user to open the file and enter a key, and the consequence is limited to a Vim process crash without plaintext disclosure.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
