Engine crash via non-string dataset value
Published Sep 18, 2026 · Updated Sep 18, 2026
NULL pointer dereference in Suricata 8.0.0 through 8.0.5 allows local users to crash the engine via a crafted JSON or NDJSON dataset. In src/datasets-context-json.c, dataset loaders pass a non-string value_key result through json_string_value and then use the resulting NULL pointer as a string. Exploitation requires the ability to supply or modify a loaded dataset or rule feed, and the crash occurs during startup, configuration testing, or rule reload before traffic processing.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
