CVE-2026-56711Network attack vector

Heap out-of-bounds write via wrapped picture allocation

Published Sep 9, 2026 · Updated Sep 9, 2026

Heap out-of-bounds write in VideoLAN VLC media player 3.0.0 through 3.0.23 allows attackers to corrupt memory via a crafted PNG file. AllocatePicture multiplies each plane's signed-int pitch and line count at 32 bits before adding the wrapped product to a size_t total, so aligned_alloc reserves a buffer smaller than the PNG decoder's scanline writes. Opening the file directly or from a playlist is sufficient, requires user interaction and no non-default settings, and allows attacker-influenced data to overwrite heap memory.
