Stale-token authentication via missing issued-at validation
Published Jul 10, 2026 · Updated Jul 10, 2026
Insufficient session expiration in ZITADEL before 3.4.12 and 4.0.0-rc.1 through 4.15.1 allows remote authenticated users to reuse stale JWTs. The external JWT IdP validator in internal/idp/providers/jwt/session.go calls CheckIssuedAt only when iat is present, so omitting the claim bypasses the one-hour maxAge check. Exploitation requires a previously trusted, signed token from a configured external issuer and permits authentication after the intended freshness window.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.

What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
