Code execution via Windows preview-link command injection
Published Oct 14, 2026 · Updated Oct 14, 2026
Command injection in Markdown Preview Enhanced before 0.8.28 allows remote attackers to run commands via preview links on Windows. The openFile helper passes a decoded, Markdown-controlled link target to child_process.exec with start, allowing cmd.exe to interpret shell metacharacters as command separators. Exploitation requires opening untrusted Markdown and clicking a crafted external or unsupported-scheme link; commands run with the current VS Code user's privileges without enabling script execution or supplying workspace configuration.
