Authenticated disclosure and service interruption via REGEXP injection
Published Jun 9, 2026 · Updated Jun 9, 2026
Regular expression injection in BuddyPress 14.4.0 and earlier allows remote authenticated users to disclose usernames or interrupt service. The activity mention resolver passes regex metacharacters through esc_sql and inserts them into an unprepared REGEXP query against the users table. The flaw is reachable only when username compatibility mode is enabled; crafted mentions permit boolean username inference or a database-query hang through catastrophic backtracking.
