Content smuggling via PAX extension-header desynchronization

Published Sep 2, 2026 · Updated Sep 2, 2026

Improper archive parsing in dignifiedquire async-tar before 0.6.1 allows remote attackers to smuggle file entries via crafted tar streams. The poll_next_raw path applies a buffered PAX size to an intervening extension header, advancing the cursor by attacker-controlled bytes. Exploitation requires a consumer to process the stream and can make extraction write different files or contents than a reference scanner observed.
