Arbitrary file read and write via archive escape
Published Jul 14, 2026 · Updated Jul 14, 2026
Path traversal in XhmikosR @xhmikosr/decompress before 10.2.1 and 11.0.0 through 11.1.2 allows remote attackers to read or write files. Archive-entry writing creates hardlinks and symlinks without validating their targets, treats sibling paths as contained through a string-prefix test, and preserves special mode bits. Exploitation requires a consuming application to extract an attacker-influenced archive; file access is limited to the process account, while root execution can create privileged files.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
