CVE-2026-53426

Erlang VM crash via unbounded atom interning

Published Jun 29, 2026 · Updated Jun 29, 2026

Resource exhaustion in Leandro Pereira MDEx 0.4.3 through 0.13.1 allows attackers to crash the Erlang VM through crafted JSON. The json_to_node/1 function passes each untrusted node_type value to Module.concat/1, which interns a permanent atom for every distinct string. Exposure requires a consuming application to pass untrusted data to the JSON source of parse_document/2; exhausting the atom table aborts every process on that BEAM node.
