Local memory exhaustion via unreleased block manager
Published Jun 24, 2026 · Updated Jun 24, 2026
Memory exhaustion in Linux Kernel dm-cache metadata allows local users to interrupt service by repeatedly reloading a table. When dm_cache_metadata_abort cannot acquire root_lock because the block manager is read-only, it fails to release a temporary block manager allocated before the lock. Reachability requires local access, a dm-cache device with read-only metadata, and repeated metadata-abort calls through table reloads or a race.
