CVE-2026-52948

Local service interruption via I2C timeout overflow

Published Jun 24, 2026 · Updated Jun 24, 2026

Integer overflow in Linux Kernel 2.6.29 through affected 7.0 releases allows local users to interrupt I2C and SMBus service. The I2C_TIMEOUT ioctl in drivers/i2c/i2c-dev.c multiplies an insufficiently bounded user value by 10, wraps it, and stores a negative adapter timeout. Access to an i2c-dev device is required; premature timeout returns leave the SMBus controller state machine unrecoverable.
