SYSTEM code execution via writable plugin map
Published Jul 14, 2026 · Updated Jul 14, 2026
Privilege escalation in Microsoft Install Service on affected Windows releases allows local users to execute arbitrary code as SYSTEM. Standard users can write PlugInList and StaticPluginMap registry state that the SYSTEM service trusts when selecting and loading a plugin DLL. Exploitation requires an interactive local account and a trigger through the Store install-control API; successful exploitation grants SYSTEM code execution.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
