CVE-2026-49426

Audit trail falsification via ptrace result logging

Published Aug 19, 2026 · Updated Aug 19, 2026

Incorrect audit logging in FreeBSD allows local users to falsify syscall outcome records via ptrace(PT_SC_REMOTE). In ptrace_syscallreq() in sys/kern/kern_sig.c, the audited path passes syscall_thread_enter()'s setup status to AUDIT_SYSCALL_EXIT() instead of tsr->ts_ret.sr_error from the remotely executed system call. Reachability requires the ability to debug a process; affected releases are 14.3-RELEASE before p16, 14.4-RELEASE before p7, 15.0-RELEASE before p11, and 15.1-RELEASE before p1, and the consequence is misleading audit trails rather than direct code execution or data access.
