Authentication bypass via discarded JWE decryption error
Published Jun 19, 2026 · Updated Jun 19, 2026
Improper integrity validation in the jwe-decrypt plugin in Apache APISIX 3.8.0 through 3.16.0 allows remote attackers to bypass authentication. The plugin's decryption helper discards the AES-GCM authentication failure, and its rewrite handler checks an unset error value before forwarding plaintext. A valid consumer kid in a JWE header is required; when jwe-decrypt protects a route, a forged token reaches the upstream without the shared secret.
