Authenticated media overwrite via missing edit check
Published Jul 7, 2026 · Updated Jul 7, 2026
Incorrect access control in Joomla! CMS 4.1.0 through 5.4.6 and 6.0.0 through 6.1.1 allows remote authenticated users to overwrite media files. The com_media webservice endpoints authorize file replacement without requiring the editing permission that protects the target media item. Reachability requires a privileged API account; Joomla has not published the specific faulty code-level check, and the reported consequence is unauthorized file replacement.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.

Attacks
What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
