CVE-2026-48851Network attack vectorHinoki check available

Trusted-prompt spoofing via residual trust state

Published May 25, 2026 · Updated May 25, 2026

UI misrepresentation in PuTTY 0.77 through 0.83 allows remote attackers to spoof a trusted proxy-password prompt in Telnet sessions. After proxy authentication, the client fails to clear its trust state, so server-controlled session data retains the icon sigil reserved for client prompts. The gate is a proxy-authenticated Telnet or Rlogin session controlled by remote attackers or man-in-the-middle attackers, followed by user entry of the requested proxy password.
