Host file modification via followed rootfs symlink
Published Aug 14, 2026 · Updated Aug 14, 2026
Symlink following in Containers crun before 1.28 allows local users to alter host files through a crafted OCI bundle. The create_missing_devs() path opens rootfs/dev without O_NOFOLLOW, then uses the descriptor for mknodat(), symlinkat(), and forced unlinkat() operations. Exploitation requires rootful processing of a bundle whose rootfs/dev is a symlink and whose configuration omits a /dev mount; device nodes and symlinks are created outside the rootfs, and an existing ptmx file is replaced.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.
