Host command execution via Promise species hijack
Published Jun 12, 2026 · Updated Jun 12, 2026
Sandbox escape in Patrik Simek vm2 before 3.11.4 allows attackers to execute arbitrary commands on the host through crafted sandbox code. The localPromise constructor invokes the host Promise.prototype.then without resetting Symbol.species, letting a custom Promise capture a raw host RangeError. Attackers must already control JavaScript evaluated inside a vm2 sandbox, after which the host process and its command-execution facilities become accessible.
