Unauthenticated service crash via null upstream dereference
Published Jun 26, 2026 · Updated Jun 26, 2026
Null pointer dereference in Envoy allows remote attackers to crash the proxy with an unauthenticated Connect protocol request. The grpc_stats filter handles Connect content types as gRPC-like traffic and dereferences a missing upstream cluster when a direct_response route bypasses upstream routing. The crash requires grpc_stats and a matching direct_response route; one header-only HTTP request interrupts the entire Envoy process.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.
