Host code execution via incomplete builtin denylist
Published Jun 12, 2026 · Updated Jun 12, 2026
Sandbox escape in Patrik Simek vm2 before 3.11.4 allows attackers to execute arbitrary code in the host process through NodeVM. NodeVM's exact-match dangerous-builtin denylist in lib/builtin.js omits process and fails to cover the inspector/promises subpath, so hostRequire exposes APIs that reload child_process or evaluate JavaScript in the host realm. Exploitation requires an application to allow process, inspector/promises, or the require.builtin wildcard; default NodeVM configurations are not exposed.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
