Host behavior manipulation via cross-realm symbols
Published Jun 12, 2026 · Updated Jun 12, 2026
Sandbox escape in Patrik Simek vm2 before 3.11.4 allows attackers to alter host-side behavior through cross-realm symbols. The Symbol.for override exposes Node.js symbols, while bridge set, defineProperty, and deleteProperty traps accept those keys on host objects. Reachability requires attacker-controlled code in a vm2 sandbox with a non-protected host object; the demonstrated result is host data-integrity loss, not direct code execution.
