Kernel panic via unbalanced HFS+ node reference
Published May 27, 2026 · Updated May 27, 2026
Denial of service in Linux Kernel HFS+ support allows local users to trigger a kernel panic through a corrupted HFS+ filesystem. hfs_bnode_create() returns an already-hashed node without taking a reference, so hfs_bnode_put() later decrements a zero reference count and hits BUG_ON(). The path requires local low-privileged access and an HFS+ allocation collision caused by an in-use node or corrupted filesystem metadata.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
