Local filesystem transaction abort via incomplete extent scan
Published May 27, 2026 · Updated May 27, 2026
Improper Btrfs chunk allocation in Linux Kernel 4.1 and later allows local users to abort a filesystem transaction. In fs/btrfs/volumes.c, dev_extent_hole_check() examines only the first pending extent in a candidate gap, so find_free_dev_extent() can reuse space occupied by another pending extent and create overlapping chunk maps. Triggering requires Btrfs DUP allocation with nonconsecutive pending extents; forced chunk allocation is typically gated by CONFIG_BTRFS_EXPERIMENTAL.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
