Privileged system crash via cpcap-battery teardown race
Published May 27, 2026 · Updated May 27, 2026
Use-after-free in the Linux Kernel cpcap-battery driver allows local users to crash the system during device removal. The driver requests its IRQ before registering the power_supply handle, so reverse devm cleanup frees the handle before unregistering the handler and power_supply_changed() dereferences freed memory. Reaching the removal race requires CAP_SYS_ADMIN access to sysfs driver controls; the documented outcome is a crash or silent kernel-memory corruption.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
