CVE-2026-44294Network attack vector

Service interruption via unescaped field-name control characters

Published May 13, 2026 · Updated May 13, 2026

Improper input validation in protobuf.js before 7.5.6 and 8.0.0 through 8.0.1 allows remote attackers to interrupt service via crafted schemas. Generated encode, decode, verify, and conversion functions embed schema-controlled field and oneof names into property accessors without escaping certain control characters, producing invalid JavaScript that throws a syntax error during compilation. The application must load an attacker-influenced schema or JSON descriptor and trigger runtime code generation; trusted, application-defined schemas are not directly affected, and code execution is not reported.
