Host command execution via null-prototype exception proxying
Published May 13, 2026 · Updated May 13, 2026
Sandbox escape in Patrik Simek vm2 before 3.11.2 allows attackers to execute arbitrary commands on the host through sandboxed code. handleException treats a thrown null-prototype sandbox object as originating on the other side and proxies it, exposing both proxied and unproxied forms that lead to the host Function constructor. Exploitation requires arbitrary JavaScript execution inside a vm2 sandbox and runs commands with the host Node.js process's privileges.
