Guest crash via dangling CR8 interception
Published May 13, 2026 · Updated May 13, 2026
Improper state management in Linux Kernel KVM SVM allows local users to crash Windows guests when AVIC is active. The AVIC activation path leaves CR8 write interception enabled, allowing the hardware TPR and KVM's LAPIC state to diverge. The failure is limited to AMD SVM hosts with AVIC and becomes fatal to Windows guests when the separate TPR synchronization flaw is also present.
