Local kernel crash via unexpected delayed reference
Published May 8, 2026 · Updated May 8, 2026
Reachable assertion in Linux Kernel 2.6.31 through 6.19.5 allows local users to crash the system during btrfs delayed-reference processing. The run_one_delayed_ref() function calls BUG() for a node type outside its handled tree, data, and owner-reference cases instead of returning an error. Low-privileged local access and btrfs use are required; triggering the assertion stops the running kernel without disclosing or modifying data.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
