Root shell access via hardcoded Telnet credentials
Published May 4, 2026 · Updated May 4, 2026
Hard-coded credentials in D-Link DIR-605L Firmware B2 allow remote attackers on the local network to obtain a root shell via Telnet. At boot, /bin/telnetd.sh reads a static password from /etc/alpha_config/image_sign and passes it with the Alphanetworks username to telnetd, while login compares supplied credentials with strcmp(). LAN or Wi-Fi adjacency and TCP port 23 access are sufficient; successful authentication grants full administrative control of the router.
