Configuration takeover via untrusted workspace dotenv
Published Apr 20, 2026 · Updated Apr 20, 2026
Environment variable injection in OpenClaw before 2026.3.28 allows context-dependent attackers to override runtime settings via a workspace .env file. The loaders in src/infra/dotenv.ts and src/cli/dotenv.ts read the current working directory file before trusted state-directory configuration and accept its security-sensitive entries. Exploitation requires a crafted repository or workspace and user interaction to start OpenClaw from that directory, after which injected values control configuration available to the process.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
