Authenticated privilege escalation via unchecked group assignment
Published May 22, 2026 · Updated May 22, 2026
Privilege escalation in authentik before 2025.12.5 and 2026.2.0-rc1 through 2026.2.2 allows remote authenticated users to gain superuser access. UserSerializer accepts arbitrary groups in PATCH requests for users without enforcing the enable_group_superuser permission required by group-management paths. Permission to change a target user is sufficient to place that user in an is_superuser group, granting administrator-equivalent control.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.

What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
