SYSTEM privilege escalation via unchecked process launch
Published Jun 25, 2026 · Updated Jun 25, 2026
Privilege escalation in MSI NBFoundation Service 2.0.2506.1201 and earlier allows local users to run arbitrary processes as SYSTEM. The PC:REXE handler accepts an attacker-controlled executable path and arguments from the MSI_SERVICE_2 named pipe, then StartProcessAndBypassUAC launches them with a duplicated winlogon token without meaningful validation. Any authenticated low-privileged Windows user who can access the permissive pipe can gain full SYSTEM privileges.
