Local compiler crash via overlong memcpy
Published Mar 5, 2026 · Updated Mar 5, 2026
Out-of-bounds read in Ettercap 0.8.4-Garofalo allows local users to crash etterfilter with a crafted filter script. During filter compilation, add_data_segment copies slen + 1 bytes from a parser-allocated string that can contain only slen bytes, reading past its heap buffer. A local user who can invoke etterfilter and supply a filter file can terminate that compiler process; upstream reports no impact beyond the crash.
