Process crash via unchecked EXIF IFD index
Published Jul 20, 2026 · Updated Jul 20, 2026
Out-of-bounds read in libvips 8.18.1 and earlier allows local users to crash an image-processing process via crafted EXIF metadata. In libvips/foreign/exif.c, vips_exif_image_field() converts an exif-ifd suffix with atoi() and previously passed an unchecked negative or oversized IFD index toward libexif processing. Exploitation requires low local privileges and processing a crafted image; the reported consequence is a null-pointer dereference and process crash, not data disclosure or modification.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
